The American red fox (Vulpes vulpes fulva) is a North American subspecies of the red fox. It is the largest of the true foxes and one of the most widely distributed members of the order Carnivora, occurring in North America. This subspecies is most likely the ancestor of the domesticated silver fox. The red fox is considered a more specialised form of Vulpes than the Afghan, corsac and Bengal foxes in the direction of size and adaptation to carnivory; the skull displays far fewer neotenous traits than in other species, and its facial area is more developed. It is, however, not as adapted for a purely carnivorous diet as the Tibetan fox. WebRed foxes do best in mixed farmland with areas of deciduous woodland. They are typically less abundant in large tracts of woodland because prey densities tend to be lower, particularly where established populations of tawny owls (Strix aluco) compete for small mammals. - Credit: Marc Baldwin tobermore hydropave cost
